Ireland Beats Fiji For The First Time

Ireland beat Fiji 21-12 for the first time since the inception of the HSBC series in1999 at the Singapore series this afternoon.

Lead by captain Tevita Daugunu, the Fijians failed to get their breath allowing Ireland’s wing Jordon Conroy to run away with two ties in the first half to lead 14-0 at the break.

Old hands Jerry Tuwai, Josua Vukurunabuli and Waisea Nacuqu could not gel in with the newcomers and that saw opportunities going astray.

It was obvious that the Fijians have been studied by the underdogs with Ireland’s super timing denying the opposition territory and tries.

Fiji returned in the second half determined by getting their act together leading to a try in the corner by Vuiviawa Naduvalo.

Tuwai sliced the uprights to narrow the score 14-5 to Ireland.

Then another quick one with better deliveries saw Joseva Talacoko scoring under the crossbar, try converted with Fiji trailing 12-14.

Tuwai came off and was replaced by Filipo Bukayaro.

Handling errors and predictable play caught out the Fijians. Then seconds from the final hooter Ire-land forward Terry Kennedy dashed for the finisher which was also successfully converted.

By then the Irishmen were all smiles as finally they hammered home their first ever 21-12 victory against Fiji after 23 years.

In the first game of their pool France walloped Japan 36-14.

Later today Fiji will meet France at 5.06pm in their second match and then play Japan at 8.22pm in their final pool match.

The cup quarterfinals will kick off at 4.28pm tomorrow, semis will start at 8.13pm while the final will be played at 11.28pm.
