Prayer Ritual Turns Fatal, Family Mourns Son’s Death

The late Divek Raj, was described as a kind, selfless and honest man.
This was how Salesh Prasad described his 29-year-old cousin, who died after he was suspected to have drowned while conducting a prayer ritual at the Waibula River in Korovou on Sunday afternoon.
Mr Prasad said it was hard for their family to accept that his cousin was no more.
He was an assistant court officer with the Judicial Department.
Mr Prasad said the death of Mr Raj had left the family grief-stricken as they mourned his sudden death.
“He was the eldest of five siblings and he always took care of his family. His parents are really affected by his passing,” Mr Prasad said.
“My cousin was a decent person who always put others before himself. He was a Pracharak (preacher) and took pride in his religion.
“We prayed for nine days during Ram Naumi, but unfortunately on the last day my cousin drowned.
“Mr Raj’s employer, Chief Registrar Judge Justice Yohan Liyanage, said what happened to Mr Raj was unfortunate.
Police said Mr Raj allegedly drowned while conducting a prayer ritual and was seen by his mother swimming alone.
