The Gujarati football tournament focuses mainly on player development.
That was gist of Gujarati Fiji Sports Association president Sanjay Patel’s message during an interview with SUNsports at the Fiji Football Association Academy in Vatuwaqa, Suva, on Friday.

“Our main goal is to develop more youngsters to become good football players so they can play for their district teams as well,” he said.
“In terms of youngsters, we have a good number of youth players that we’ll try to develop.

We have the like of former Nadi district rep Shaqar Patel, who is now playing for Lami, this year. And for someone to go up and play for our national team, it will be a good motivation for these young boys. We have a few officials that are part of the district teams and we’ve Rajesh Patel, the current president of Fiji Football Association.”

Patel said this is their 67th tournament and there are six teams participating in the three-day tournament.

Defending champions Lautoka lead the charge with Rewa, Suva, Lami One, Lami Two and Navua.

Patel said semifinals would be played on Sunday.
