Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar commended the relationship between the Savusavu Town Council, its chamber of commerce and its tourism association.

During her recent visit to Vanua Levu, Ms Kumar said she hadn’t seen such a relationship developed to the level of what it was now in Savusavu.

“Savusavu Town is the only town where I come across and seen the chamber of commerce and the tourism association working hand in hand with the town council,” Ms Kumar said.

“Such relationships are encouraged in other towns and cities.”

She said all projects of Savusavu Town Council would maintain the key concept of being eco-friendly and to be a Blue Town.

“I am encouraged by the commitment made by the council to improve livelihoods, aid economic recovery and achieve economic resilience,” she said.

“The Fijian Government has endorsed the Blue Town model as a pathway to economic prosperity and climate resilience.”

“Once established, this will provide a model for replication elsewhere in the Pacific region and beyond.”

“It looks to create economic opportunities and community resilience by diversifying economic activities, optimising nature-based solutions and developing public private partnerships to preserve and improve the environment.”
