Native Land Commission (NLC) is now involved in finding out the rightful owners of the land where the Vatuyalewa Jetty in Buca Bay, Cakaudrove currently sits.

This was confirmed by the Minister of Lands, Infrastructure and Mineral Resources Jone Usamate.

Mr Usamate said there had been some conflicts over the ownership of land hence the involvement of the NLC.

The Jetty is the main port of accessnfor Fijians travelling daily to and from Taveuni.

“Once this land ownership issue is sorted then the Commissioner Northern, Uraia Rainima will work with them to see the operations at the site,” Mr Usasmate said.

“So we are waiting to see how things progress and Mr Rainima’s suggestion.”

Meanwhile, last month during the budget consultation in Savusavu, a Meleti Raimuria who claimed to be one of the landowners said they would close the jetty for safety reasons because there were no proper amenities for members of the public.

Director for Grace Prasad Shipping, Soniya Thakur, confirmed that she had received letters from three landowners stating that they would temporarily close the site.

She is the captain of her own boat, Taveuni Princess.

“It is really sad because in July, 2020 I spent close to $20,000 to upgrade the area and build a small wooden crossing over for the passengers but now they want to close it,” Ms Thakur said.

“What will happen to the people if there are no boat services provided?

She said she had written to Mr Rainima seeking his intervention into resolving landowners’ issues.
