Labasa Chamber of Commerce and Industries vice president Paul Jaduram has called on authorities to install a Closed Circuit Television (CCVT) at the airport in Labasa.

While there are CCTV cameras at airports in Nausori and Nadi he said Labasa Airport should not be neglected in terms of security.

His proposal followed the mysterious disappearance of hundreds and thousands of dollars belonging to Westpac Bank. The cash went missing on April 13, during a normal money transfer assignment from Savusavu branch to Suva branch through Labasa airport.

“Although such theft happened for the first time in Vanua Levu, we hope similar incidents are not repeated in future,” Mr Jaduram said. “Let us not forget that Labasa Airport is also a high risk area, serving hundreds of local and international passengers on a weekly basis.”

He also highlighted the need to carry out major maintenance of the airport.

When contacted, the Airports Fiji Limited acting chief executive officer Isei Tudreu, refused to comment saying that Police were carrying out investigations into the alleged incident.

Fiji Police Force spokesperson Ana Naisoro said investigation was ongoing. There were Police teams both in Vanua Levu and Viti Levu looking into this case.

The security officers who transported three bags of money have been questioned by Police and released.
