Divnesh Chandra was excited to make history for Nabua Secondary School last Friday.

At the school’s prefects induction, he became its first head boy to be a Fijian of Indian descent.

The 19-year-old was inducted at the Nabua Methodist Church among 24 year captains, 12 senior prefects, and deputy head prefects; all of whom would lead the institution in the 2022 academic year.

Susan Malaefono was appointed the head girl of the school.

Divnesh said he did not expect to be named the head boy, but it was still a proud moment for him and his family.

“I know the role comes with a big responsibility, but I am ready to take on the challenge,” he said.

“I thank the teachers for choosing me and for trusting me with this role. I was expecting a senior prefect role and I didn’t know I was going to be the head boy.”

He said since Year Nine, he has enjoyed the friendship he has formed with the students.

“This is a school with majority iTaukei students, but I have blended well with them and they have become more like my family,” he said.

“We play together, share ideas and I’ve gotten to know and understand their culture too.”

He said he hoped to ensure discipline and that the rules of the school were closely adhered to by all.

“After completing Year 13, I want to pursue something in Accounting and Management at USP,” he said.
