To know that your child has been given a second chance in life is what every mother prays for.

This Mother’s Day, Esther Underwood Rokobuli said a free surgery for her 10-year-old daughter through the Sai Prema Foundation was her best gift this year.

When Ms Rokobuli was informed in 2020 that her daughter Bulou Marisela Rokobuli suffered from atrial septal defect (ASD) she panicked.

This is because Ms Rokobuli lost her eldest child to a heart problem in 2008 when she was two months old.

ASD is a hole in the heart between the upper chambers (atria). The hole increases the amount of blood that flows through the lungs. The condition is present at birth.

Ms Rokobuli thanked the foundation for giving her daughter a chance to get a surgery at the Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Heart Hospital.

“When my daughter was in the hospital I was scared not knowing how things would turn out but the staff were very encouraging.

“The staff were clear on what to expect and what could go wrong and I trust them.”

“It was not easy but knowing that my child was not the only one suffering broke my heart but I continued to thank the Lord for his plans.

“We may have our plans but God has the final say.”

Ms Rokobuli thanked the foundation as they did not have to worry about the cost of the surgery.

“A surgery like this would cost a lot and to have this surgery free of cost in Fiji. We were at peace knowing that everything was taken care of,” she said.

She said when the doctor had informed her that everything went well she was relieved.

She was in tears knowing that her child was out of surgery without any complications at all.

“What else can I do but thank the Lord that He has provided throughout this journey. This journey was not an easy one. I have lost one child already to a heart problem and for my second child to survive was a blessing.”

“This is the best mother’s day gift to know that my daughter has been given a second chance in life.”

Meanwhile, on Saturday night the foundation held a ‘Gift of Life’ ceremony to celebrate the children who received free heart surgeries.
