Since 2018, a total of 41,000 Fijians have been assisted by the Government through the Fiji Ex-Servicemen’s Aftercare Fund.

More than 10,000 people are assisted yearly.

Updating Parliament on the benefits available under the Fund, Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum listed a monthly allowance, medical assistance, educational assistance and death benefits accessible to members.

A monthly allowance of $199.40 is paid to married recipients, $124.60 to single recipients, $39.25 to each eligible child of the recipient and $99.70 to disabled children.

The number of recipients varies each month and failure to provide a life certificate leads to the suspension of the allowance.

The maximum approved medical allowance is $150 per year for Ex-Police, Ex-RFMF and Ex-Correction Service Officers and their dependents.

Like medical assistance, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum stressed the importance of education for children.

Under the fund, basic stationery and a pair of uniform is given for each applicant from Primary to Secondary School with allowances ranging from $50-$100 per year.

In addition they receive tuition assistance of $500 maximum for tertiary education per semester.

Death benefits of $200 are paid to the recipient’s next of kin to assist with funeral arrangements.
