A-G To Parents: Don’t Force Your Children

The Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is urging all parents not to force their children on becoming something they don’t want to become in life.
The Attorney-General gave this timely advice when he officiated at the prefects’ induction at Tavua College last Friday.
He said it was important for students to pursue a career they were wholeheartedly passionate about.
“Parents please allow your children to pursue a career they want to pursue, don’t force them to become something they don’t want to become,” the A-G said.
“I’ve seen so many parents have said to their children, you must become an accountant, you must become a lawyer, if your daughter, if your son wants to become an engineer let them do engineering.”
The A-G said this was also supported by Government through the National Toppers Scheme (NTS) and the Tertiary Education Loans Scheme (TELS).
The school head girl, Sarah Peckham, 18, said she was inspired by her parents, Mairam Robinson and William Peckham after seeing their hard work and support towards her and her siblings.
“I wasn’t expecting to be in this role, but I have worked my way up over the years,” she said.
The Vanua Levu native from Bua Province aims to become a social worker and psychologist.
Head boy Riaan Khan could not be any happier to become a leader at secondary level.
“It was always my dream to become a leader and a role model for others,” he said.
“I want to pursue my career in robotics because I am fascinated with computer science.”
