Former Lawyer Appeals Against Practicing Certificate Cancellation By Chief Registrar

A former lawyer, who was accused of drug-related offences, has filed a civil case against the Chief Registrar and the Attorney-General. Shazran Abdul Lateef has appealed the decision of the Chief Registrar canceling Lateef’s practicing certificate.
The matter was called before Chief Justice Kamal Kumar at the Civil High Court in Suva.
Lateef claimed that he lost his practicing certificate in 2019 after a series of drug-related charges, however, he was discharged from the case after the Magistrate ruled that there were several discrepancies and inconsistencies in the evidence. Chief Justice Kumar had directed the counsels from the A-G’s Office to file and serve their affidavit in opposition by June 1. Lateef has been given time until June 15 to file a response.
He is also been given time until June 20 to file his submissions and submissions in reply by July 22.
Counsels from A-G’s Office have been given time until July 13 to file their submissions.
The matter will be called for hearing on July 27.
