Community From Club’s Income Generating Project

Delaikamali Youth Club from Yasawa Village in Udu Point, Vanua Levu has turned a community seafood storage issue into an income-generating project to benefit both the community and club.
These were the sentiments shared by club president, Viliame Misianini, following the Labasa District Youth Council awards night, last Saturday, at Subrail Park, Labasa.
The club of 35 registered members were rewarded for being the Best Income generating project (IGP) youth club.
Mr Misianini said it was an honour and privilege for their club after their recent formation last year compared to the other youth clubs who had more experience.
Mr Misianini said their income-generating project focused on acting as a middle man between their villagers and the large scale buyers in other areas of the Northern Division.
He said they bought fish supplies from these villagers at a reasonable price and then sold them off to interested buyers in major centres like Labasa, Savusavu and Taveuni.
“There was an abundance of seafood supplies in our village and due to no storage facilities available, these resources were being wasted,” he said.
The 35-year-old thanked Leadership Fiji and the Ministry of Youth for supporting them with solar freezers, solar system, fibreglass boat and engine.
