Australia’s newly elected Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says he looks forward to working with Pacific countries in building a stronger Pacific family.

The newly elected PM made the comments while responding to a congratulatory tweet by Fiji’s Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama on Sunday.

When this edition went to press, Mr Bainimarama was one of the only three world leaders, including United States President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Tudreu that Mr Albanese had officially responded to and acknowledged on Twitter.

Prime Minister Bainimarama in his congratulatory tweet to Mr Albanese said he was grateful that of his many promises, Fiji welcomed his choice to put climate first.

He added that the future of the people in the pacific depended on that promise.

He also extended an invitation to the Australian PM saying: “With Fiji’s borders open, we hope to host you soon!”

The Australian government has supported Fiji in many aspects and a few of this include the funding of the newly refurbished $100 million Blackrock camp in Nadi, the support rendered by Australian health professionals as part of the Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) that assisted Fijian medical professionals during the second wave of COVID-19 outbreak here and the more than $130 million in direct budget support amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
