Vodafone Fijian Bati head coach Joe Rabele will have a tough time to select his final 30-member squad for the Rugby League World Cup from October 15 to November 19 in England.

Rabele named a 50-member extended squad after the President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere launched the official Fijian Bati jersey at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva, on Thursday night.

Rabele is expected to name his final 30-member squad after the June test against the Papua New Guinea Kumuls. The squad will have 26 travelling players and four non-travelling reserves.

“It is a big pressure for me to select the final 30 players for the world cup,” Rabele said.

“We have a lot of talented players in the squad. Majority of the players selected are in their 20s so what I’m doing is to pick the best. The rest of the players I will try and pick for the 2025 world cup. This is like a build-up process for us ahead of the 2025 world cup.”

Rabele clarified that the selection made was based on performance.

“For our local players the selection was based on our fitness test. We started training and conducting various tests from November last year.

“We tried to pick the best to be in the 50-member squad for the world cup. The process now is to select the best team available after the June test. We have to select a very solid team for the world cup.”
