An Australian businessman has been released on bail by the Nadi Magistrates Court in relation to drug charges.

The accused, Sam Amine, 46, appeared before Magistrate Nirosha Kanaangara charged with one count of unlawful possession of illicit drugs.

The accused was represented by two separate lawyers Iqbal Khan and Mark Anthony while Sergeant Bola Nadavu represented the prosecutions.

The court heard that on February 2019 Police searched the accused’s flat at Fantasy Island in Nadi where the substance, Anabol steroids of 451.6 grams, was found in the Energy Fiji Limited meter box.

Police prosecution objected to bail as the matter was of a serious one, the accused is a threat to the community, and he was at flight risk.

Mr Khan did make a bail application where he told the court that he was surprised to note the nature of the case was very weak.

Magistrate Kanaangara granted the accused bail but with strict bail conditions, this include providing two sureties, a $3000 cash bond and to surrender travelling documents. Not to depart Viti Levu and to report to Nadi Police station once a week.

The matter has been adjourned to June 25 for plea.
