Fiji Airways 7s captain Tevita Daugunu still believes Fiji has a chance to win the World Sevens Series.

Speaking to SUNsports on Wednesday at the Nadi International Airport, Daugunu said: “Fiji still has a chance to clinch the series. The team still has the chance to work things right before the next leg. I believe in the boys, and we believe in each other. We are always reminded that the best way to prepare is to work hard.

“So, when we get back into camp, we will make sure that we work hard to try to finish first or second in the competition.”

Based on a new format implemented by World Rugby because of COVID-19, only the best seven out of the nine tournament results count toward the series ranking for each team. That puts Fiji in fourth spot with 104 points on the HSBC World Sevens Series, behind leaders South Africa (124), Australia (122) and Argentina (118).

For Fiji to win the series, South Africa and Australia must not reach the quarterfinal stage in Los Angeles.

Dauguna also said they would need to work on making the best decisions on the field.

“That’s what was told to us after the Toulouse tournament. Receiving and to maintain our possession from the kick offs,” he said.

Fiji won the Toulouse 7s beating Ireland 29-17. In London, they won bronze after beating Samoa 31-26.

Daugunu also acknowledged the fans for their support in Toulouse and London.

“We are happy to be back home. It was a good outing for us because for many, this was their first trip to Toulouse and London. We are thankful to the fans there,” he said.

The arrival of the 7s players and officials was greeted by a small group of local fans.

The team returns to camp after a week-long break. The final leg of the series is in Los Angeles, U.S.A. on August 26-28.
