Former Soldier’s Attempted Murder Sentence Appeal Granted

Padyachi was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment after the High Court in Suva ruled he attempted to drown his 35-year-old partner while swimming at the Colo- i-Suva pool.

Former soldier Rajiv Krishnan Padyachi, 29, who was sentenced to life imprisonment had his appeal against sentence granted.

He was jailed for the attempted murder of his former partner.

Padyachi was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment after the High Court in Suva ruled he attempted to drown his 35-year-old partner while swimming at the Colo- i-Suva pool.

 

On that day of September 15, 2018, they agreed to go for an early morning swim.

A team of police officers heard the woman’s cry for help and managed to save her and arrested the accused.

The victim sustained injuries during the incident.

 

Padyachi was sentenced to life imprisonment, subject to him being eligible for consideration of pardon after serving 15 years.

The matter was called before Court of Appeal Judge Justice Chandana Prematilaka.

Padyachi’s leave to appeal against his conviction had been refused.

The matter has been adjourned to August 3 to check appeal records.
