Backyard composting is one of the keys to addressing waste management issues, says Minister for Waterways and Environment Mahendra Reddy.

He said composting was an easy way to produce organic fertilisers (free from chemicals) and helps to rejuvenate the soil by adding useful nutrients such as carbon and nitrogen.

Without composting, he added these wastes are discarded and its usefulness was not harnessed.

He made these comments while handing over ten composting bins to the Nabouwalu Village and the settlements of Raviravi, Sautalo and Namulumulo in Bua last Friday in his bid to support communities in their composting efforts.

He said peopple have the ability to make developments sustainable and use resources wisely to ensure that it meets the needs of the present without compromising the future.

“Simple sustainable practices such as recycling can have significant positive impact on the environment,” Mr Reddy said.

“It is estimated that up to 75 per cent of all waste can be recycled or even repurposed, this is an impactful fact and only goes to show how much the world is losing by not recycling.”

He said everyone has a moral responsibility to ensure that they look after their natural environment.
