A Year Five student of Holy Family Primary School, Sakiusa Naduva, has been praised for his bravery by the Chief Operations Officer Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Abdul Khan.

On June 9 (last Thursday), the 10-year-old boy found a brown packet containing what was believed to be marijuana on the footpath of Saint Mary’s Primary School in Labasa.

Upon discovery, he then reported the matter to Labasa Police Station where he was acknowledged and praised for his honesty and courageous act.

This not only shows how brave he was, but tends to show the reality of what he has been taught from home.

“The Fiji Police Force commends the student for alerting Police of this find and we acknowledge his parents for instilling moral values that have clearly contributed to the child’s journey in becoming a responsible member of society,” ACP Khan said.

Sakiusa, originally from Naweni, Cakaudrove said he was afraid to go to the Police Station until his brothers advised him to do the right thing.

“When I recalled my mother’s teaching that stealing is a sin, I decided to face the officers and speak the truth,” Sakiusa said.

“I didn’t know that it was drugs.”

His mother, Unaisi Naqarase, 46, said life hasn’t been easy for them because her husband was away at the village farming while she was looking after five children and the house.

“We moved to Naodamu block nine in Labasa after Easter for the sake of children’s better education opportunity,” Ms Naqarase said.

“Every evening and Sunday I take all my children to Holy Family Parish Church.I am happy Sakiusa has put into practice what he learned from home and church.”
