The Afraaz Ali captained- Maigania football side beat Lautoka 4-2 in a penalty shootout in the final of the 2022 Digicel Fiji Muslim Sports Interdistrict Championship at Prince Charles Park, Nadi, on Sunday.

Both teams remained 0-0 after extra time in a thriller as both goalkeepers played their hearts out.

Maigania’s goal came from the boots of Mohammed Shafeem, Mohd Kasif, Asif Khan, and Mohammed Aziz.

Lautoka managed to score through Zibraaz Sahib and Muzzabil Nabi. It was unfortunate that Mohammed Izaz, and Mohammed Zinal were off target.

Maigania had the services of William Valentine, Ato Yankson and Nadi Futsal rep Mohamed Shalmeen while Lautoka fielded Edward Aaron and Edward Justin.

Maigania head coach Fazil Khan said it was a great effort by his team to win the tournament for the first time since 2019.

“We had the strength to do the job,” he said.

“I thank all the players and management for guiding and supporting us throughout.

“I told the players to play simple football. Control and apply pressure and the victory will come.

“It was a very tough four days, for the players whatever I told them they did their job.”

In the first semifinal, Lautoka beat Drasa 5-4 in a penalty shootout, while Maigania edged defending champions Ba 1-0 in another tough encounter.

Meanwhile, a 40-member Fiji Muslim squad has been named
