Empower Pacific chief executive officer, Patrick Morgam said a total of 11,339 calls were made by counsellors to people who tested positive for COVID-19 during the third wave.

This was during Psychology First Aid Training for government officials and advisory counsellors at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel in Lautoka from June 15-17.

The training targeted the Divisional Commissioner West’s emergency operations centre because civil servants and advisory counsellors are first respondents during natural disasters,

Mr Morgam said 11,339 calls were made from December 2021 to date.

Food shortages at home had been found to be the main issue raised by callers, mainly those who are considered breadwinners.

“In terms of unemployment, they had trouble affording food, they have children and families that they are trying to take care of.

Calls increased once the 24/7 toll-free counselling helpline number 5626 had been advertised.

“What we did was people were in quarantine isolation, lockdown so we could not visit them,” he said.

“We didn’t know where they were and with the safety of the staff in mind, we initiated the 24/7 counselling helpline.

“So, by radio, television and newspaper, we let people know about how to reach us whenever they needed

“We have 24/7 counsellors ready to respond. They have been known to receive about 15 calls a day which amounts to more than 6000 calls a month.”
