The cruise ship sector is expected to generate an estimated $20 million in revenue for Fiji over the next six months.

With 39 vessels arriving in Fiji over the rest of the year, Tourism Fiji is working to regain its market position.

Chief Executive Officer, Brent Hill, said the cruise ship sector earned Fiji an estimated $44 million in annual revenue, one that Tourism Fiji aimed to get back over time.

“The cruise liners are largely from Australia, New Zealand and Pacific origins,” Mr Hill said.

The first of the 39 vessels arrives in Fiji in August.

One vessel can earn Fiji as much as $400,000, he said.

“Tourism Fiji is keen to promote yachting into the United States of America, and Europe,” Mr Hill said.

“But that will focus mainly on the southern hemisphere.”

The development comes six months after the resumption of commercial flights that have brought over 118,000 tourist arrivals.

$90 Spending Per Passenger

A study revealed that each cruise ship voyage brought in an average of $305,000 in spending per port of call, while one cruise ship passenger brought in $90 of spending each.

Protocols

To ensure the safe return of cruising to Fiji, the Fijian Government will put in place additional measures to reduce risks that include:

  • All travellers 16 years and above – both cruise passengers and crew – be fully vaccinated with a Fiji recognised COVID-19 vaccine;
  • A Rapid Antigen Test taken within 24 hours prior to disembarkation at Fijian ports;
  • Valid medical travel insurance, with international coverage of COVID-19.
  • All on-shore excursions will also be guided by health and safety protocols, including the Care Fiji Commitment.

According to reports, cruise ships indirectly impacted five major sectors:

  • general retail,
  • food and beverage,
  • hotel,
  • transport, tours and entertainment, and
  • specialist tourism retail.

In 2019, the cruise ship sector brought in 74,000 visitors, through Fiji’s three ports in Lautoka, Suva and Savusavu.
