Nadi Airport School and Marist Brothers High School are the champions of the 2022 Fiji National Schools Swim­ming Championship in the lower and upper division respectively.

Nadi Airport School and Marist Brothers High School are the champions of the 2022 Fiji National Schools Swim­ming Championship in the lower and upper division respectively.

The two-day competition was held at Suva’s Olympic Pool where 23 pri­mary and 17 secondary schools and 400 swimmers participated.

Nadi Airport School won the over­all lower division (ages 9-14) bagging 17 gold, 20 silvers and 11 bronze med­als.

Mount St Mary’s Primary School from Nadi took out the men’s lower division category with 21 medals; 14 gold, 4 silvers and 3 bronze while Nadi Airport School dominated the women’s lower division with 27 med­als; 11 gold, 9 silvers and 7 bronze.

MBHS won the overall higher di­vision (ages 15-19) winners with 25 gold, 14 silvers and 8 bronze medals. The Flagstaff boys won a total of 47 medals.

They edged Swami Vivekananda College from Nadi. SVC won 22 gold, 30 silvers and 28 bronze medals with an overall total of 80 medals.

International School Suva came in third place winning 11 gold, 5 silvers and 1 bronze with bringing their tally to 17 medals.

Seven new records were set during the two days.

Team Fiji swimmer to the Birming­ham Commonwealth Games, Kel­era Mudunasoko broke two records which was set by Moana Wind in 2016.

Records Broken

Day 1

  • Matelita Naisara clocked 2:54.45 in the Female 13-14 200m backstroke beating Geradyne Lanyon’s three-year record of 3:09.29.
  • Thaddeus Kwong broke Temafa Yalimaiwai’s eight-year record of 34.20 in the Male 12-12 50m Back­stroke with a time of 33.44.
  • Reuben Taylor clocked 2:26.02 in the Male 13-14 200m Freestyle to beat David Young’s record of 2:26.19 which was set in 2018.
  • Kelera Mudunasoko who set a new record of 1:17.70 in the Female 14-14 100 metres Breaststroke beat­ing Moana Wind’s record of 1:19.08 which was set in 2016.

Day 2

  • Theola Kwong clocked 1:22.42 in the Female 14-14 100m backstroke beating Anarosa Lavekau’s 7-year record time of 1:22.53.
  • Thaddeus Kwong broke Hansel McCaig’s 2016 record of 1:18.32 in the Male 12-12 100m backstroke with a time of 1:15.46
  • Kelera Mudunasoko set a new record of 2:51.66 in the Female 13-14 200m breaststroke beating Moana Wind’s record of 2:55.45 which was set in 2016.
