U.S.-Fiji Relations Continue To Grow Stronger: Fitzmaurice

The United States is one of the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with Fiji in 1971.
“Since then, U.S.-Fiji ties have continued to grow stronger,” U.S. Embassy’s Regional Public Affairs Officer, Stephanie Fitzmaurice said.
Ms Fitzmaurice said the partnership had paved the way to developing cooperation across a wide range of interests from trade and other economic ties to educational and cultural exchanges.
“One of the most enduring, and lasting legacies is Peace Corps Fiji. Since 1968, more than 2,500 U.S. citizens have served as Peace Corps volunteers in Fiji.”
She said the Peace Corps had enabled Americans to immerse themselves in Fijian culture, becoming part of the communities in which they served.
“This has been an exchange of learning that has taught Americans as much about Fijian resilience as it has Fijians about American innovation,” Ms Fitzmaurice added.
“Our ties with Fiji are strong, enduring, and growing and as friends, allies, and for many, family.”
The Embassy will celebrate the U.S.’ 246th birthday to mark Independence Day celebration.
The celebrations will take in the coming weeks where guests will be invited to the Embassy to rejoice their enduring democracy and the vibrant partnership with Fiji and other Pacific partners.
“We want to bring a spirit of togetherness as we deepen partnerships and strengthen co-operation with our friends and neighbours in Fiji, Kiribati,Nauru, Tonga, and Tuvalu,”she said.
