Disunity In Unity

Claims of lack of accountability and ‘pathetic’ management of party funds were among the reasons the former Unity Fiji general secretary Satish Kumar handed in his resignation last month.
Mr Kumar who was also a candidate of the Unity Fiji party in the 2018 general elections has made claims that party leader Savenaca Narube has not been able to manage funds of the political party yet was harping on the management of the economy.
He claimed that the party had been finding it hard to pay for the monthly rent of their office space in Samabula due to the mismanagement of funds.
However, Unity Fiji party leader Savenaca Narube has strongly refuted Kumar’s claims saying that Mr Kumar with some other party members had wanted to illegally convene an annual general meeting without the approval of the board members or president Adi Sivia Qoro.
Mr Narube said that Mr all those Kumar was suspended he from his position as the general secretary and as a board member.
He added that the former general secretary handed in his resignation voluntarily after he tried to convene the unlawful meeting.
CLAIMS
Mr Kumar said he had resigned due to the lack of confidence, trust, hope and visionary leadership in Mr Narube.
“There are more reasons why I handed in my resignation, but I do not want to reach a petty level. Professionally, I am disappointed because of all those things,” he said.
“I have documentary evidence to support my claims. Of course, there is a need for the party to find a replacement for me because I have handed in my resignation.
He said he had also resigned because the Unity Fiji party failed to have its annual general meeting from its inception in 2017 till December 2021.

Satish Kumar
“It was due to Mr Narube and his style of management that I left the party. I handed in my resignation to the party two weeks ago. If I did not push for that agenda then I have failed in my duty as the general secretary. It is an obligation because it is in our constitution for us to have meetings annually. Five years in a row, there were repeated calls made to the management board members to have an AGM, but Mr Narube failed to convene a meeting.”
He said he had resigned due to the lack of confidence, trust, hope and visionary leadership in Mr Narube.
Response From Narube
In response, Mr Narube said the former general secretary handed in his resignation as he had differences with some of the party members.
“No, his resignation was not due to the mismanagement of funds as he has claimed,” he said.
“Mr Kumar, with few other party members, wanted to have an annual general meeting without the approval of the board members or president, Adi Sivia Qoro.
“He was suspended from his position as the general secretary and as a board member. The announcement will be made once the board has made the approval. Someone has stepped into the acting position, he steps in after the investigation has been completed.”
He added that Mosese Bataniceva had replaced Mr Kumar as the general secretary, and an announcement on this would be made soon.
