The Commonwealth secretary-general Patricia Scotland will attend the Pacific Islands Forum meeting that begins on Monday in Suva.

This was confirmed by Ministry of Foreign Affairs Acting Permanent Secretary Yogesh Karan on Friday.

She arrives in the country this weekend.

The meeting is from July 11-14.

Ms Scotland had taken up the secretary general role in 2015 after she was unanimously elected by 53 commonwealth countries.

She was the first woman to hold the role.

She was re-elected to the role at the Commonwealth Head of Governments meeting held in Rwanda last month.

Ms Scotland, who calls herself as a ‘child of the commonwealth’ is a staunch advocate of climate change, education, science and technology to make a better world for children.

She is a British barrister and jurist who has served in many ministerial positions within the United Kingdom Government.

Ms Scotland joined the British Privy Council and was appointed Parliamentary Secretary in the Lord Chancellor’s Department in 2001.

She was the official minister in charge of civil justice, civil law reform, and the thorough overhaul of land registration that resulted in the Land Registration Act of 2002.

In addition, she served as the Lord Chancellor’s Department’s official international affairs coordinator.
