Ardern Praises Govt for Work on Gender Equality

New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, has praised the Fijian Government for its work in the area of gender equality.
Ms Ardern said she was inspired by the work that different government ministries in Fiji were doing to elevate women and girls in the communities during her visit three years ago.
Speaking at the gender-supported programme breakfast hosted by the New Zealand High Commission at the Museum, she said girls were a powerful force to make changes in the world.
“I recall that a few years ago, I had the opportunity to meet women in leadership at the New Zealand High Commission residence in Suva,” she said.
“At that gathering, one of the things that we discussed at the time was the work that was being done by the ministries here around elevating women and girls.”
“I remember at that time, I was so impressed that the non-governmental organisations and civil societies were doing work behind the scenes to further those aspirations.
“One reflection I’ve constantly had since I’ve been involved in politics, which predated my time in the New Zealand Parliament, is the absolute belief that we lift our girls and communities up.
“Girls are a powerful force to make changes, they raise their voices and make positive changes in their families, communities and the world,” she said.
“This is why the issues around gender equality and empowerment have been a priority for New Zealand and it has been for Fiji too.”
She said the Fijian Government had done some remarkable work towards gender equality and ending violence against women.
