Fiji Kulas Ready For Solomons

No game is easy at the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Women’s Nations Cup says Digicel women’s football head coach, Lisa Cole.

Cole made the comments as her Kula side prepare to take on Solomon Islands in their first match at 7pm tonight at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.

Following the locals’ two wins in the friendly matches against Tonga and Cook Islands last week, Cole said they have been fine tunning details.

Kulas thrashed Tonga 5-0 and won 4-1 against Cook Islands at Churchill Park, Lautoka.

The team presented their i-sevusevu to the President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere on Monday.

“We are excited with the opportunity, we are eager to get on the field,” Cole said.

“We’ve had two practice matches that went very well.

“The games against Tonga and Cook Islands were to measure things, they were opportunities for us to play different players.

“The two games were good measures for us; the speed of the game, we’re hoping for it to be a bit quicker, we were able to play a bunch of people and gained good results.

With seasoned players like captain Sofi Diyalowai, Naomi Waqanidrola and Jotivini Tabua on the side, Cole said it was a great combination with the youth players.

“It’s always hard to tell what’s going to happen, when you have a blend of old and young players.

“We really talked about creating a new legacy for ourselves. They lean on what the past has done because they have done some tremendous success in the past but if it gets stuck to be doing things the same way, then you will get the same results.

“I was able to watch two of the Solomon Islands games; they are going to give us some challenges.

“Their mid field is very fast and they have good speed on the flanks.

“I think we match up them well, it will come down to us showing our quality on the day.”

The OFC women’s nations cup kicked off last night between Samoa and Tonga.
