A record number of drowning cases in Rewa has prompted calls by the Gone Marama Bale Na Roko Tui Dreketi, Ro Teimumu Kepa for better supervision of children near rivers and waters.

Speaking at the Rewa Provincial Council Meeting yesterday, Ro Teimumu said the province had recorded more than 30 cases of drowning so far since last year.

She said most of the drowning cases were children from the ages one to 29-years-old.

“Parental supervision and engagement please keep it your priority. They are your children, they are our children as well and we want what is best for them,” she said.

“It’s crucial for us to be vigilant while going out for a swim. We have lost so many children to drowning.”

“To parents and guardians please be careful when you go to the beach, river and swimming pool. I am pleading for you to stay with your children, if he or she is somewhere near the water, please do not leave them alone,” she said.

She said with the festive season around the corner, it was crucial for children to stay home rather than going out without parental supervision at swimming spots and pools.
