The Fiji Court of Appeal has allowed a driver who killed two sisters in a road accident in 2018 leave to appeal his sentence.

Viliame Ratoto has been jailed for nine years with a non-parole period of eight years for two counts of manslaughter, one count of breach of zero alcohol limit, and one count of disobedience of lawful order.

Ratoto was also disqualified from driving for a period of four years.

On September 16, 2018, at Kanace Road in Nasinu, Ratoto while heavily intoxicated, drove a motor vehicle registration number EVENTS in a manner that caused the death of Archana Amrita Chand, 26, and Anjula Chand, 35.

Ratoto had pleaded guilty to the offences in the High Court in Suva.

He filed a leave to appeal against his sentence.

Appeal’s Judge, Justice Chandana Prematilaka, has allowed the leave to appeal against his sentence. A date for mention would be given via notice to both parties.
