No Nurses At Stations, Yasawa Villagers Need Service And Medication

Two nursing stations in Yasawa remain empty and people are beginning to worry about their health conditions.
The concern was raised at the Ba Provincial Council meeting in Sorokoba Village earlier this week.
Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete, said the ministry was looking for nurses to be based at the two stations.
“We are waiting for the transfer of nurses to their new postings and we have the two nursing stations on that list,” he said.
Dr Waqainabete said the delay was also from their plans to upgrade some nursing stations into a nurse practitioner station which would mean more access to health services and medications.
He said this would increase the chance of people getting the medication they need without going to a health centre.
The people on the island said this would help promote the various tourism businesses they have on the island.
Additionally, Dr Waqainabete said they were doing their best to have nurses posted to the island as soon as possible.
Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Kahiyum, said rural allowances for nurses have been reinstated and that it would not be an issue when fetching for nurses in rural and maritime areas.
In Fiji, there are 205 health facilities with 103 nursing stations, 78 health centres and three divisional hospitals.
