Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has revealed that water may be billed on a monthly basis.

This was in response to a plea at the Ba Provincial Council meeting in Sorokoba Village on Wednesday.

The plea was from Lepani Rasowalu from Namoli Village, Lautoka.

He said the water billed from a three-month reading was too much to pay within a short timeframe.

“It’s stressful having to pay for our water bills after three months,” he said.

In response, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the reading of water usage was beginning to be done by Energy Fiji Limited meter readers, adding the company was helping out.

He said the Government and Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) were already in talks to consider monthly billing of water around the country. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also said this would help ease the burden for people paying their bills at the end of the month.

At the meeting, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the Government was also exploring other services that would make daily conduct of life much easier for Fijians.

Solely for the Ba Province, over $32 million has been invested to improve water infrastructure from 2014 to 2022.

“We have made sure that important water installations are improved and supply capacity maintained through targeted investments for Nagado, Vuda junction to Saweni junction, and the servicing of thousands of homes through Rural Water Scheme in your province,” Prime Minister Voreqe Banimarama said when opening the council meeting.
