The announcement by the Tui Namosi, Ratu Suliano Matanitobua of his retirement from politics was expected.

Not so much the appointment of his successor, 51-year-old Maciu Katamotu.

According to sources present at the Bose Vanua meeting on Wednesday, Ratu Suliano had nominated his son, Ratu Simione Matanitobua to take his place.

In fact, Ratu Simione chaired the Bose Vanua meeting.

His nomination did not sit well with a number of traditional leaders present.

A representative from one of the districts stood up and said the person that represents Namosi should be well educated and have a respected job.

He added that the province of Namosi should feel represented when the person is in Parliament.

Another stood up and gave Mr Katamotu’s name to be the successor which everyone agreed on.

Mr Katamotu will contest under the People’s Alliance Party banner.

Ratu Suliano’s lawyer, Filimoni Vosarogo was also present at the meeting. He informed the Bose Vanua that he had written a letter which will be presented to the court.
