“Members of the public in the Ra district will no longer have to drive to the service station at Vaileka, a short distance from the town, just to refuel their vehicles,” says Rakiraki businessman George Shiu Raj.

This was after the grand opening of the One Stop fuel station at Waimicia in Ra yesterday.

The joint investment of $2 million between George Shiu Raj Investments and Pacific Energy, had taken 18 months to construct with the concept discussion taking place back in 2020 in Nadi when Mr Raj met with Pacific Energy National sales and marketing manager Nemani Kobiti to discuss the project.

The service station consists of an LPG setup, a lube bay tyre centre and eight nozzles.

“There’s no other service station in the area, this is the only one, it will cater for people from Nalawa, Nakorotubu and Saivou and also for the vehicles passing by here going to Suva,” Mr Raj said.

He said in terms of refueling costs, the service station would charge what the Fijian Competition and Commerce Commission had approved.

“We constructed it on our own and didn’t hire any construction company. Before people would have to fill their fuel at Vaileka, even their gas they used to go to Rakiraki to fill which cost them another $15,” he said.

“Before going over to any other district, I have to take care of my generation, where I was born, this sort of attitude, we as businessmen should have.”

Pacific Energy National sales and marketing manager Nemani Kobiti commended Mr Raj for his resilience.

“We had a site meeting here and this place was overgrown, there was nothing except the shops that were around here as you can see today, then it was decided that we with Mr Shiu Raj, would build a service station for Pacific Energy in Waimicia,” he said.

“On behalf of Pacific Energy, we would like to thank Mr Shiu Raj for his vision and his view of actually transforming this little place in Waimicia into what it is today.”
