Motorists need to get use to the rising fuel prices for now, a business leader has said.

Mike Towler, president of the Textile Clothing Council, said the recent movements in the price of oil has seen fuel prices in Australia and New Zealand decrease lately.

“We expect that this will happen in Fiji in due course too,” he said yesterday.

“We have a bit of a lag in price movements here because of our small market, and the system that we use for setting the prices.”

“My expectation is that, after the current increase, the next movement will be down, not up.”

His comments follow public concerns over making ends meet in the face of escalating cost of fuel.

Public Reactions

Suresh Chand, who has been in the taxi business for the last five years ,said: “I feel the fuel price brings no good as we are losing profit.”

“It should have gone down.”

“Other basic items prices are increasing which will make life more difficult.”

“We are spending more money on fuel than food.”

Merelita Tabuasova, a vehicle owner who travels from Laucala Beach to work every morning, said the sudden increase in fuel price was challenging.

“Increase in cost of food and fuel has left vehicle owners on the losing end, as we try to make ends meet,” she said.

Another taxi owner, Shivneel Nand, called for a higher intervention on the matter.

“Our family and loved ones are suffering the most; we hope authorities will look for ways to decrease the cost of fuel,” he said.
