Investigation Report Not Credible, Says A-G

Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has questioned the credibility of a report which is claiming Grace Road Group members were being abused while in Fiji.

The report was complied by Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.

It markets itself as an “investigative reporting platform for a worldwide network of independent media centres and journalists”.

OCCPR believes it takes a network to fight a network.

It’s Pacific headquarters was setup last year in Sydney. It has journalists based in a number of Pacific Island countries.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said no one have heard of Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project.

In its report, the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project claimed that despite repeated accusations of abuses and forcing members to perform unpaid labour, they have received a warm welcome from the Fijian Government.

In response to the reports, he said there was not enough evidence to substantiate the claims being made by the organisation in the report.

“I do have a response to that actually, because you are just simply plucking out some report written by some organisation who we have never heard about before,” he said.

“You are giving credibility to an organisation such as that. There are many faith-based organisations in Fiji where pastors have raped people in their congregation. I don’t think there has been a report done on that.”

“I think if you’re talking about corruption, you need to look at the well-known organisations like Transparency International, they are the credible organisation,” he said.
