Vikashni Naicker and her husband Ashneel Chand are homeless and helpless after a fire destroyed their home at Lomolomo, Lautoka on Wednesday.

The house had two flats, where Ms Naicker and her husband stayed in one while the other was vacant. She confirmed that the house was not insured and she needed time to calculate the worth of damage.

She said the house was on agricultural land and the lease had expired.

But it was under the estate of her grandfather who has passed away and the trustee was her aunt who resides in the U.S. Ms Naicker said she stayed there for 41 years.

She suspects the fire may have started in the vacant flat.

“I was not home because we left home at around 11.45 am. I was at the prosecution’s office at the courthouse when my aunt called to tell me the house was on fire at around 1.30 pm.”

She and her husband do not have a temporary place to reside at the moment.

“We are appealing to people if they could assist us with anything because we lost everything. My husband is a sweets seller and also does some casual maintenance work,” she said.

“Police spokesperson Constable Wame Bautolu confirmed the report of a fire at Lomolomo hillside of a three-bedroom corrugated iron house and investigations were underway.”
