‘We Want Proper Standards In Private Practice’

It is important that our doctors are ethical and they follow proper standards. This was the statement from the newly-elected Fiji College of General Practitioners (FCGP) president, Dr Rajesh Maharaj on Saturday.
He took over the role from former president, Dr Ram Raju. Dr Maharaj was appointed as president following the college’s annual general meeting (AGM) at the Warwick Fiji in the Coral Coast.
He said the team of new executives would continue the legacy of the college.
“We are just continuing with the legacy that we want. We want adequately trained doctors and for that we have the ongoing education which is called CME (continuous medical education) so we want to continue with that and strengthen that,” Dr Maharaj said.
“We want proper standards in private practice, we want ethical practice.”
“It is important that our doctors are ethical because our consumers are patients and they need help, they are sick, they are suffering so we want to make sure there is ethical practice and there are proper standards followed by our doctors.”
A lot of hard work had gone into the formation and running of the college including the training of doctors.
“The college has evolved quite significantly and now the mini conferences and the annual conferences is well attended by delegates from parts of the country, Australia and New Zealand,” he said.
The team of new executives will serve for a term of two years.
Other executive members are Dr Shanita Sen – vice president, Dr Sailasa Misimisi – incoming secretary, Dr Dhirendra Lal – sensor in chief.
There are about 220 members affiliated with the FCGP.
