Students Sexual Assault Probe

A prominent school in Suva has been investigating inappropriate student behaviour, believed to be involved in sexual assault cases.
It is alleged that the latest incident took place two weeks ago with its official report lodged last week.
One of the victim’s close relatives told the Fiji Sun they were tired of seeing their relative being taken in for questioning.
The close relative claimed their family was too distraught to talk. However, the school’s principal admitted that a number of students were being investigated for their inappropriate behaviour.
“As a school leadership we are taking these allegations seriously and are investigating them in co-ordination with Police and relevant authorities,” the principal said.
“As a school we strive to establish and maintain a learning environment based on the teachings of Jesus Christ, where students feel safe and secure.”
Commissioner of Police, Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho, confirmed that a report was lodged at the Samabula Police Station and that Police were investigating the allegations.
The commissioner said the report involved an incident between two students.
The Ministry of Education has said it would not interfere with the school’s actions because it was a private school.
Minister for Education, Premila Kumar, last Friday, said it was a private business, indicating it was not the ministry responsible for handling the allegations.
