The Labasa District Youth Council is excited about organizing its first-ever hydroponics training programme to educate youths.

The training will be held on August 18 and 19 when 25 to 30 youth representatives from their respective clubs in the Macuata Province will attend.

Council Programme coordinator, Mohammed Shanil, said this would be an opportune time for youths to enhance their knowledge on the method of plant nurturing through hydroponics.

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in a medium, such as sand, gravel and liquid from the traditional soil culture of growth.

Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports, Alvick Maharaj, will be the chief guest at the two-day training.

Mr Shanil said the response from youths was high with calls to organize two more days to accommodate the high demand from August 25-26 as well.

He said the benefits of engaging in hydroponics training were massive.

Participants will learn controlled plant culture where conditions would be controlled by the youth nurturing the plant.

“The use of modern techniques where liquid culture equipment like water pumping pipes and oxygen circulation equipment will be incorporated,” he said.

Hydroponics is the best solution to meeting the demand for crops and vegetables during the entire year.

“There are many times when demand is high and supply is low for vegetables and crops, and this method of nurturing plants is faster and more effective,” he said.
