Meet Nawi Island Marine Biologist

Sarah Makutu joins the Nawi team as Marine Biologist. Armed with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Science she has years of experience in observing, studying and reporting on animals and plants that inhibit the marine environment.
Specialising in resort marine conservation and preservation, she will be focused on Nawi’s environmental responsibility, impacts and long term sustainability.
Her experience in coral restoration, seaweed farming, mangrove rehabilitation, sea life preservation will be instrumental in ensuring that Nawi Island remains diligently compliant with EIA and CEMP regulators.
“I hail from Rukua Village on Beqa Island so I’m extremely passionate about the Ocean and everything in and around it.”
I’ve experienced first-hand the environmental effects on our Marine Life so I’m extremely excited to join the Nawi Team at this development stage to ensure that we remain focused on getting our Marine and Environmental responsibilities right, from the very start.
“These goals are entrenched in their development plans and I’m happy to be a local woman tasked to take this forward. And the opportunity to be a Fijian woman, in a predominantly male dominated field of expertise, is a welcome challenge, to change the social norm, and I’m grateful for Nawi who recognise the potential in my abilities,” Ms Makutu said.
Nawi said: “Sarah’s hands on experience in the local environment will be a key factor as we continue with development, and her quadrant methods will enable Nawi to mitigate risks and achieve our ultimate goal of being an environmentally sustainable development.”
