Apart from athletics the Suva Grammar School Under-18 girl’s rugby team is keen to learn rugby. They are currently participating in the Southern Zone of the Weet-Bix Raluve Trophy competition.

In an interview SGS U18 captain Lydia Tubuna said they are still learning about the finer details of the sport.

The Sabeto, Nadi, lass, plays at hooker.

“Our preparations during the week had been tough because for most of the girls this is their first time to play rugby,” Tubuna said.

“Some of the girls haven’t touched the rugby ball growing up so we are still learning. Training for us is about learning more about the game and adopting new skills like knowing how to pass the ball, ruck and kick.

“We want to thank Weet-Bix for their support especially introducing this competition for girls.”

Former SGS girls who have made their mark in rugby includes Black Ferns prop Tanya Kalounivale, Rooster Chicken Fijiana XVs prop Joma Rubuti and ex-Fijiana 7s winger Paulina Korowaqa.

On the brighter side of development the introduction of the Raluve Trophy competition adds a lifeline to the development of women’s rugby.

The inclusion of the Raluve competition has now assisted the Fijiana 7s and 15s coaching staff in mapping out their development structure.

With 77 schools participating from around the country the pool of players to select from is wider.

Schools like Ratu Latianara Secondary School, Ballantine Memorial School, Naitasiri Secondary School, Kalabu High School have stamped their mark in the first round of the Raluve competition.
