Nineteen-year-old duo Tomasi Qalibau and Veleki Totogo, who are alleged to have been involved in the Raiwai terror on Sunday, have been denied bail by the Magistrates Court in Suva.

Bail was denied for their own interest, safety and the protection of the community.

Qalibau and Totogo appeared before Magistrate Lakshitha Jayawardhana yesterday. Qalibau is charged with one count of criminal intimidation, serious assault and breaching bail conditions while Totogo is charged for resisting arrest and for breaching bail condition.

They are also jointly charged with one count of malicious act. The court heard that both of the accused are unemployed and have pending matters before the Magistrates Court Three.

The allegations are that on August 14, Qalibau and Totogo threatened a Police Officer by lifting a cane knife against him to cause alarm and had resisted arrest.

The allegations are that the duo breached their bail conditions which was imposed by the Magistrates Court Three by reoffending.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Luke Qerewaqa said Qalibau and Totogo have both been charged for allegedly acting in a manner prejudicial to public safety or for the peace and good order of Nairai Road, Raiwai.

He argued against granting bail saying that tension between Raiwai and Mead Road was present and it was for the duo’s own safety and for the protection of the community.

Magistrate Jayawardhana said both the accused could formally apply for bail while being in remand. The case has been adjourned to August 30.
