National goalkeeper Akuila Mateisuva will play his first Punjas Battle of the Giants tournament for Suva today.

He will face his former team, Farmtrac Labasa, in the Group A opener at 12pm at Churchill Park, Lautoka. Mateisuva, who is Suva’s captain, said it would be a challenging journey, however, they would like to put an end to Suva’s 27-year winless drought.

The Ram Cleaning Services/ Destiny Bar and Bistro sponsored- side last won the B.O.G title in 1995.

“I believe it will be a challenge,” Mateisuva told SUNsports yesterday.

“The boys have prepared well, there’s some minor injuries, but nevertheless the players are fit and ready to deliver.

“We know the last few games in the Digicel Premier League were not in our favour but we are looking forward to our B.O.G campaign.”

Mateisuva added their 2-1 loss to Labasa, last Saturday, would not determine their performance today.danger

“Our first game is against Labasa; if you look at the last game we played, we lost but still it does not dictate what we are going to deliver at Churchill Park.

“We also have Nadi and we know all the teams are preparing very well.

“I think we have done our part and I believe the boys can do it. If I’m chosen to play tomorrow (today) for Suva, I will give my best. I look forward to playing against my former team.”
