Eighteen-year-old Manish Jeet Singh did not expect that one day he’d be cutting the hair of Fiji’s Prime Minister.

But he did last Saturday, when Voreqe Bainimarama walked into Afroz Hair Salon at Jet Point, Martintar, Nadi, and was assigned the task.

From that experience, Mr Singh, who was still in awe days after the experience, said he was now inspired to learn more about the profession.

He dropped out of school to support his family.

“I will cherish that day for the rest of my life,” Mr Singh said.

Born and raised in Solovi, in Nadi, he learnt the trade from his uncle, Karun Mudaliar, a barber-turned taxi driver.

He did part-time attachment while he was a student of Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Memorial College (SSKMC).

“I really felt good about myself and proud actually,” he said.

“In my life, I did not know that I would cut the hair of Fiji’s Prime Minister. It was such an honour.”

Mr Singh hopes that one day he will have his own barber shop and inspire school dropouts too.

Mr Bainimarama was in the West last weekend when he decided to visit the hair salon. He had a haircut alongside five-year-old Aryan Singh from Sabeto.

Shop owner, Afroz Khan, 46, said his barber shop has been in operation for the past 12 years. He accepts customers from all walks of life.

“This is the first time we’ve had Mr Bainimarama come to our shop,” Mr Khan said.

“We had a very good chat and I am confident that he can win (2022 General Election) again this time.”
