Two state-of-the-art operating theatres at the Ba Hospital will soon be ready to take on patients.

Aspen Medical Fiji chief executive officer, Annette Owttrim said the latest operating theatre had been fully commissioned and the team had redone the central sterilising and supply that would be completed by the end of next week.

Ms Owttrim said the group would also be putting scavenger systems throughout all the operating theatres.

She said this is standard in Australia for anesthetics and so when someone’s having an operation and had the anesthetic, “we have what’s called a scavenger system”.

“So those that are around the patient breathing the gases that are putting them to sleep, there are various parts of the machinery to stop that happening, which is what we’ve put in.

“Some of the machines don’t have that in Fiji.”

Staff

Ms Owttrim said the most common feedback from staff was that the new journey was an exciting one.

She said an area of focus for the Aspen Medical team was to encourage staff to take on more leadership roles especially for local staff who haven’t had any opportunity.

“We’d like to give them support as we’re going through that process, but they can see and they can see what new equipment that’s coming, new facilities, starting to get organised for all of their new uniforms, there is excitement in the place.

“Each and every individual health professional must do the best job that they possibly can and that’s starting to infiltrate and I think our patients will start to see that more as we go into the future.”
