Raku Opens A New Bank Account To Help With Daughter’s Tertiary Fees

Susau Maria Raku opened a new bank account in a bid to save money for her daughter’s tertiary education.
Her new bank account is with the Bank of the South Pacific. This was possible through the Rights, Empowerment and Cohesion (REACH) project that is currently in Rotuma.
Ms Raku did not have to travel to Fiji as the banking services representatives were present at her village of Oinafa – about 30 minutes away from the Ahau Government station.
“This is such a relief for my husband and I as we will not worry much about where we could save money for our daughter’s education,” she said.
Her daughter, Kimberly Lavon, is a Year 11 student at Rotuma High School.
“My daughter wants to become a sales and marketing specialist and we are doing all that we can to make her dream a reality,” she said.
“There are scholarships that she needs to work hard in getting one, but we do not want her to fully rely on it, we want to serve our purpose as well as parents.”
Ms Raku’s husband works at the airport in Rotuma.
“We have another daughter who is much younger and we want her to see her older sister as an example,” she said.
The bank, along with almost 20 other Government and non-government organisations were on the island to provide rare services – be it health, agriculture services and even counselling – for the next two weeks.
