Father’s Day was a day of mourning for the Tuiwainikai family in Nagata, Labasa, Vanua Levu. Family members are reeling in sorrow as Ratu Tuiwainikai, 48, died at the Labasa Hospital, just two days away from celebrating Father’s Day with his two daughters.

The two daughters – a police officer and nurse based in Suva – were too distraught to speak about the tragic death of their care-free father.

It is alleged that the late Ratu Tuiwainikai died from injury suffered while out drinking in Labasa Town on Thursday, last week.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that a farmer in his 40s was in custody. Ratu Tuiwainikai was a single father after his wife left him and his two daughters 25 years ago.

Older brother, Manoa, described his younger sibling as humble, loving and also a comedian, who was full of life.

“We are still in a state of shock,” the 58-year-old said.

Police Ms Naisoro claimed that last Thursday morning, Ratu Tuiwainikai was found heavily intoxicated outside a Labasa nightclub. He was then transported by Police officers to his residence.

“During the day, the victim started to develop breathing difficulties and was taken to the Labasa Hospital by a family member, where he shortly passed away,” she said.

Ms Naisoro also alleged that the suspect in custody had assaulted Ratu Tuiwainikai, causing injuries that resulted in his death.

A post-mortem examination was conducted last Friday. Findings are yet to be released. Further investigations are continuing.
