Do The Basics Right, Says Coach

The Fiji Airways Fijian men’s 7s players have been told to keep the ball and create try scoring opportunities.
Head coach Ben Gollings said with days away from the Rugby World Cup Sevens, the new format adopted would mean that it won’t be an easy tournament.
Gollings said his men would have to focus on doing the little things right.
“We’ve to focus on doing the basics right,” he said.
“By doing those things the scoreboard will take care of itself. Ball retention, winning possession and avoiding breakdowns are vital for us.
“We love to play with a lot of flair but at the same time keep the ball the whole 14 minutes.
“By doing that we are creating more try scoring opportunities for the team as a whole.
“These games are about taking those opportunities and turning them into points.”
Gollings said it is important that the players keep playing on their feet.
“We need to let the ball do the job so we don’t get tired easily.
“If we play the game on our feet, we don’t want to play too much on the breakdown because the opposition will target that area.
“Our strength is to play on our feet, keep the ball alive and keep it moving as well.
“I’m sure that if we play to our strength it will give teams like South Africa more problems. We will focus on that area and make sure that we remain consistent.”
The tournament starts tomorrow.
