In an effort to recognize coconut farmers around the country, a new President’s Coconut Farmers Award was launched at the Fiji Coconut Millers in Savusavu on Friday.

Chief Guest, the President of Fiji, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere said the award was special as it would recognize farmer’s contribution to the industry.

The President said it was about time that farmers were recognized and accorded formally for their years of contribution to the industry.

He said many Fijian children who are now employed and leading in their professions had their humble beginnings through coconut farming.

“The award also encourages potentially young farmers and children to have a sustainable livelihood in coconut farming,” Ratu Wiliame said.

He saluted the decision made by the board to allow the award programme to be organized.

Fiji Coconut Millers board chairman Raj Sharma, said the award was named after the President’s designation to honour his contribution to the industry.

The President is a board member of the company.

Mr Sharma confirmed that six categories for the award would be recognized for farmers.

The categories include: the best farmers award, best farmer with the highest supply annually, young farmer award, best farmer for dry copra supply, best farmer for raw copra.

To ensure inclusiveness of women farmers, they have also incorporated the best women farmers award.

The dates for the award nights would be determined after the application and assessment of farmers who are interested.

Copra farmer, Dan Loabuka, appreciated the award’s inception saying the recognition would contribute to a healthy relationship between farmers, the Government and Fiji Coconut Millers.

“When there is no recognition, there is less interest to work as a farmer, the award encourages all farmers and families,” he added.
